Abstract
Background: Domestic animal rabies had occurred only in strictly high-risk regions up to 2013. A total of 11 cases were detected in Suwon and Hwaseong, considered as high-risk regions in 2012 and 2013. Meanwhile, human rabies has not been reported since 2005. The Centers for Disease and Prevention control has been monitoring animal bite cases through the National Animal Bite Patient Surveillance (NABPS) to strengthen rabies surveillance, since 2011.

Methodology: The demographic details of animal bite victims (age, gender, district, season, etc), exposure status (primary reported cause of bite), and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) and animal bite were collected through the NABPS. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.

Results: In 2015, 877 animal bite cases were reported. According to the classification by province, 484 cases were in Gyeonggi province and 378 cases were in Gangwon province. Animal bite occurred between June and August and hands and lower legs parts were mostly injured by dogs. About 87.2% of patients belonged to category III and confirmed that they were promptly treated according to the guideline on human rabies prevention and control. Monitoring animal bite victims through the NABPS system has an important role in controlling human rabies efficiently. We will educate residents in high-risk regions and staff in public and health care organizations to contribute to a rabies-free country.
